The Igede Community Flag

5th September 2016 was an eventful day for the sons and daughters of Agba; the igede people of Benue south senatorial district of Benue  State, Nigeria as they marked their new yam festival popularly known as Igede Agba. It is the traditional annual new yam festival of the Igede people (Agba Community). It is also a seasonal festival that is determined by the solar and lunar calendars, and the cycle of the seasons. It is celebrated annually on the first “Ihigile” market day in the month of September, hence the date oscillates between the 1st and 5th of September.

Apart from the fact that the festival offers the Igede people the wonderful opportunity to exhibit their hospitality with enough food and drinks, enable them to enjoy merriment and spiritual rebirth together, instills the spirit of love, charity, generosity and good will among the people, Its significance lies in the beginning of harvesting of yam to prevent shortage of food. This is because having food in abundance gives hope for survival. Furthermore, new yam festival reminds Igede people of their cultural heritage which promotes spiritual rebirth and sacramental manduction.

Also, this year’s Igede-Agba Celebrations was so unique and significant because for the very first time in the history of Agba Community, they had an official promoter of the festival. Choice93.3fm-Agba community radio was present to promote and showcase their culture to the world. CFM_Weblogo
